periodic location update (PLU)

The Periodic Location Update (PLU) is a periodic update of the information ( LU) about the location in which the mobile station is currently located. The time after which a PLU update is to take place is specified by the network operator and transmitted via the Broadcast Control Channel ( BCCH).
