The term update can be derived from "up to date", which means "up-to-date" or "bring up to date". Updates are therefore updates to hardware or software.

Updates are offered by companies in order to eliminate weaknesses of previous versions, to eliminate incompatibilities or to introduce new, improved, more powerful functions adapted to certain guidelines or standards into the update products. Whereas software updates used to be shipped as compact discs or DVDs, they are now available as downloads or are downloaded on the fly by the software company.

Inautomotive technology and mobile communications technology, updates of operating systems and application programs are carried out via a radio link. This update transmission technology is known as Over the Air( OTA).
