outside vapor deposition (OVD)

The Outside Vapor Deposition Method (OVD) is an optical waveguide fabrication process in which a different type of glass with a different refractive index is condensed from the hot, gaseous state onto the outer surface of a rotating glass rod. By this measure, a gradient of the different refractive indices is applied over the coating from the outside. Other manufacturing processes for optical fibers are Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) and Plasma Activated Chemical Vapor Deposition (PCVD).
