The Object Naming Service (ONS) is a central directory of manufacturers using the EPC code.

EPCglobal uses the Object Naming Service to provide a name tag that identifies each item that has an RFID tag. Information about each individual object marked with the EPC code can be retrieved via the various information and discovery services. In merchandise management, for example, the EPC Information Service( EPCIS) ensures that EPC codes are assigned to the corresponding products. The EPC Discovery Service (EPCDS) can be used to determine which company is involved in the merchandise management chain and where the product is currently located.
