Joint Source-Channel Coding (JSCC) is a promising transmission technique for radio channels. JSCC is characterized by the fact that it can also be used when the transmission quality of the radio channels changes and when the theoretical limits of the transmission rates are reached.

In Joint Source-Channel Coding, the transmitted bit streams are transmitted with different error protection in different frequency ranges. High- order bits are provided with higher error protection and transmitted over less impaired radio channels, whereas low-order bit streams have lower error protection and are transmitted over more impaired radio channels. In addition, brightness signals are treated differently than color signals and high-frequency signal components.

JSCC coding is a very efficient coding used in Wireless Home Digital Interface(WHDI), among others.
