inter packet gap (IPG)

The Inter Packet Gap (IPG) defines the minimum distance between two consecutive data packets.

This IPG time takes into account the decay behavior of passive transmission components and ensures that there is no detectable level left on the transmission medium. With Ethernet, one also speaks of the Interframe Gap( IFG); this is 9.6 µs.
