image communications

Image communication comprises various techniques and processes for capturing and transmitting images on the transmitter side and reproducing them on the receiver side.

On the transmitter side, the process phases of image communication are divided into image acquisition followed by scanning and quantization. In order to reduce the data volume of the images for transmission, the image data ischecked for irrelevancies and reduced by means of image compression. To ensure that errors are detected on the receiving side or that the image data can be received without errors, error protection procedures are used on the transmitting side, for example by adding parity bits. The image data prepared in this way is encoded for transmission and then transmitted.

On the receiving side, the decoded image data is subjected to error correction, with the redundant image data being used for error protection. This is followed by decoding and decompression of the data with subsequent image reproduction of the reproduced image.
