compactPCI express

CompactPCI Express is the serial, scalable version of CompactPCI. In this version, for which special connectors have been developed, up to 16 lanes, i.e. pairs of lines, can be bundled to increase the data rate.

CompactPCI Express is essentially based on PCI Express. It is backward compatible with parallel PCI modules and software compatible with known operating systems. It is characterized by its scalability, where data rates of up to 4 GB/s can be achieved by bundling several lanes. Signal transmissionis DC-free due to 8B/10B coding and relatively insensitive to interference thanks to differential signal transmission.

CompactPCI Express, which is standardized by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group( PICMG), works in contrast to Compact PCI with other connectors via which the fast PCI Express signals can be transported. The backplane can be equipped with connectors in four different variants, which ensures a high degree of design variability:

  • PCI Express system slot,
  • PCI Express peripheral slot,
  • Hybrid slot and
  • Parallel PCI slot.
A typical Compact PCI Express system will always have one system slot and a certain number of PCI Express peripheral slots.
