# bitwise

As a rule, bits are combined into larger groups of 8, 16, 32 or 64 bits as bytes for parallel processing.

If the arithmetic operations are performed bit by bit, each individual bit of an information unit is linked to the arithmetic operand during processing. The bitwise arithmetic operation is based on a pattern of two bits of the same length that are individually linked together in a logic circuit. Corresponding logic circuits such as the AND gate or the OR gate can be used to perform conjunctions or disjunctions between two bits.
