bit interleaved parity-8 (SDH) (BIP-8)

Bit Interleaved Parity( BIP) is a checksum method that can be used to detect errors in longer transport frames.

The BIP method is concerned with error detection and error monitoring on a bit basis and not with error correction. In the BIP-8 method, all bits are grouped together in a larger unit, such as a byte, to determine the checksum, and the checksum is determined for each individual bit of a group (byte). The bit positions of the successive bytes are compared with each other and the parity is derived from this and entered in the parity byte.

The checksum algorithm is used in Optical Transport Network( OTN), Synchronous Optical Network( SONET) and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy ( SDH).
