In a computer network or in the case of several interconnected computer networks, the path from an information source to a destination is determined by the routing procedure. In certain routing procedures, it is possible to calculate alternative routes in addition to the main route determined according to certain optimisation criteria, provided that the network offers the relevant alternative routes. They are used if the main route no longer meets the original requirements due to line failures, faults or changes in optimisation parameters, for example due to delays.
