IEEE 802.3az

The topic of energy saving in Ethernet networks was already taken up by the IEEE in 2007. The working group founded for this purpose is IEEE 802.3az with the project name Energy Efficient Ethernet

(EEE). The roadmap for the development of the standard

wassuch that the first draft had to be submitted as early as 2008, followed by the second and third drafts in the following years and the standard in November 2010.

The activities are to be seen in the context of Green IT and are intended to reduce the energy consumption in Ethernet by 50 % by reducing and switching off certain transmission components.
