This code was standardized internationally as a reference code under ISO/IEC 646. The German reference was standardized by DIN under DIN 66003. In the 7-bit code, each character is represented with 7 bits. The characters are arranged in a code table and are defined by the column and line number. The numbering

can be in binary or hexadecimal notation. If the 7-bit code is represented in bytes, the missing eighth bit is supplemented by a check bit.
