zone information protocol (ZIP)

The Zone InformationProtocol (ZIP) is an AppleTalk protocol. It is located at the transport layer and is used to locate and group network nodes

in an AppleTalk network. Thereby the ZIP protocol fulfills the task to determine the network nodes which belong to a certain zone. Where in AppleTalk terminology, a zone is a logical group of network nodes. The Zone Information Protocol (ZIP) is used in the Name Binding Protocol (NBP) to determine the nodes in a network that belong to a particular zone. It is described in the TCP/IP standard document RFC 1742 from 1995.
