Zombies are bots that are placed on personal computers in botnets and, once activated, attack third-party computers on the Internet with malware or spam. The zombie attacks can be aimed at causing economic damage, server
failure or infiltrating malware. Typically, zombies are placed on PCs without the owner knowing that an external party is using his computer. Due to the higher data rates of the Internet, private computers are increasingly being used as zombie depots, as the attacks via the botnet are much more effective due to the higher data rates. Attacks launched by zombies include flooding, Denial of Services (DoS), Distributed Denial of Services (DDoS), mailbombing and smurf attacks.
