wireless wide area network (WWAN)

Wireless WANs (WWANs) are wide-area networks in which individual coverage areas or radio cells are interconnected by radio technology to increase the geographical coverage.

Technologically, WWANs use well-known mobile networks and mobile radio standards such as the GSM networks, UMTS or Long Term Evolution( LTE), but also CDMA, CDMA2000 and WiMAX. Communication in WWABs is geared toward mobility and takes place using smartphones or other mobile devices. To enable laptops and notebooks to access the WWANS provided by service providers, these devices can be equipped with appropriate WWAN network cards.
