voice profile for Internet mail (UMS) (VPIM)

Voice Profile for Internet Mail (VPIM) is a Unified Messaging Service( UMS) for sending, receiving and replying to voice messages and fax messages.

The goal of the VPIM standard, which is propagated by the Electronic Message Association ( EMA) and recognized by the Internet Engineering Task Force ( IETF), is to achieve compatibility between the various voice mail systems. Users should be able to communicate with voice mail from all terminals, regardless of location.

With VPIM, fax and voice messages are encoded with Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions( MIME) and sent over the Internet using the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol( SMTP).

The VPIM protocol governs the transmission between servers, but does not specify the end device, whether PDA, cell phone, or personal computer.
