A Visual Positioning System(VPS) works with visual maps that the VPS system creates itself using a digital camera, inertial measurement unit and GPS system. Whereby the position accuracy of the GPS data is improved by sensor fusion.
VPS systems can run on smartphones and tablets and provide centimeter- level position information indoors. This makes them much more accurate than GPS systems or GNSS. The VPS system is based on using the images captured by the digital camera for the visual map and certain features for positioning. The visual map is constantly improved by other features. The user is guided through paths that are used for localization.
