virtual tape library (VTL)

Virtual Tape Libraries (VTL) combine the advantages of fast disk backup with the more cost-effective, long-term tape backup and are suitable for restoring, recovering and creating backups.

In addition to high diskavailability, VTL libraries offer consolidated backup over Fibre Channel, iSCSI or other IP-based connections. Disk backup is like a flexibly available tape drive for the backup server.

A Virtual Tape Library (VTL) emulates multiple drives, it can support deduplication, global deduplication and replication. In it, data is first stored in the virtual tape library, which consists of disk storage, before being transferred from there to the physical tape drives that form the back-end. For example, it is possible to copy real magnetic tapes to virtual ones.
