virtual switch

A virtual switch is an intelligent network unit, implemented by a software program, through which virtual machines( VM) in a virtual network can communicate with other virtual computers.

A Virtual Switch can not only be virtual, it can also be connected to a network interface card( NIC). By being intelligent, it can ensure the integrity of VM profiles, including network and security settings. A Virtual Switch can not only forward data packets, but can inspect them beforehand and distribute them accordingly.

Some vendors integrate their Virtual Switches directly into their virtualization software, others into the firmware of their servers.
