virtual link (VL)

In Avionics Full Duplex Switched Ethernet( AFDX), the AFDX frames are not routed by the switches via the destination address, but via a 16-bit Virtual Link Identifier (VLID), which follows the 32-bit Constant Field data field and forms the destination address with it. Virtual Links (VL) represent a unidirectional connection that can be established over other transmission media. The VLIDs determine the path defined in the switch.
