video content analysis (VCA)

Video surveillance is constantly being expanded, equally in rooms, buildings, stores, means of transport, public areas such as train stations, streets and squares. As a result, video surveillance and video evaluation are becoming increasingly personnel-intensive and thus cost-intensive. Possible solutions for reducing the expense can be found in the automatic evaluation of surveillance videos with regard to conspicuous movement patterns.

Video Content Analysis (VCA), also known as intelligent video analysis, is one such approach in which video recordings are evaluated using motion vectors and motion detectors. The technique is not a substitute for physical evaluation of the videos, but separates out the recording times without significant activity, thereby reducing the time required for physical evaluation.

The VCA technique adapts to the completely different recording contents with newly developed algorithms. The enormous flood of pixels is processed by powerful video processors, which compresses them greatly. VCA technology provides software platforms for the development of surveillance cameras.

Functionally, Video Content Analysis divides long video sequences into individual scenes that are analyzed. All scenes are characterized by their own histograms, which is reflected, among other things, in the color distribution of the scenes. If differences between the frames appear in the histograms, this may be due to changes in motion. The analysis detects moving objects in the foreground against a static background. Such foreground objects are extracted and analyzed from frame to frame in terms of their position and speed of movement. They can also be classified using certain features.
