universal media disc (Sony) (UMD)

The Universal Media Disc (UMD) is an optical storage medium that Sony developed for the PlayStation Portable( PSP). The disc, which is only 60 mm in size, can store 1.8 GB of video games, music, movies, video clips and other data in a cartridge. With this storage capacity up to 4 hours of movies in video quality and 2 hours of DVD quality can be displayed.

The UMD disc, which is equivalent to a double-layered DVD in mini format, has a digital rights management( DRM), encrypts the data with the Advanced Encryption Standard( AES) with 128 bits and has an individual device ID for each PSP station. In addition, the country code familiar from DVDs is used to separate the distribution regions from each other.

For video compression, the UMD disc uses MPEG-4H.264/ AVC, with a maximum resolution of 480 x 272 pixels. Sony uses its own ATRAC3plus as the audio codec.

The UMD disc is only available in a playable version and not in a recordable version, likewise there will be no UMD burners. Even game manufacturers will not be able to produce their own UMD discs.
