unified threat management appliance (UTMA)

Security appliances are divided into those that perform only one specific task, i.e., Specialized Security Appliances( SSA), and those that can be used for all security solutions, i.e., Unified Threat Management Appliances (UTMA).

UTMA systems are complete security systems that integrate the various security solutions in one box. These include the functions of firewalls, intrusion detection systems( IDS), intrusion prevention systems( IPS) and antivirus gateways. UTMAs examine the data stream for attack patterns, which they can detect with their IDS systems and prevent with the IPS systems. They check incoming and outgoing data to see if they are infected by viruses or worms, block illegal Internet addresses( URL) and master content security mechanisms.

UMTA solutions are suitable for a manageable IT infrastructure, the UTM appliance has only one interface for all functions, which greatly simplifies management.
