trunk cable

Trunk cables are main supply cables. The term is used in Ethernet, in broadband systems or for backbone cables. It can equally be a single-core or multi-core cable made of TP cables, coaxial cables or optical fibers.

In broadband systems, trunk cables consist of one or more coaxial high- frequency cables that are routed from the head end to the subscriber terminals. These coaxial cables have a diameter of one to two centimeters. The outer layer is formed by a solid plastic jacket, under which there is a layer of aluminum. Within this aluminum sheathing, the power supply for the active components can be inserted. This allows the number of required stable supplies to be reduced to the feed points.

In data centers, trunk cables form the backbone. They consist of many optical fibers that connect the core switches to other components. Base-8 or Base-12 cabling with multi-fiber connectors is used as the cabling technology. In addition to MPO connectors, URM connectors are also suitable for Base-8 cabling, as they combine four or eight optical fibers. MPO connectors can even accommodate up to 72 optical fibers in one connector.
