triple play

Triple play are multimedia services offered by network operators, telecommunications companies, cable network operators and Internet providers. It is the combined offering of telephone, television and Internet, based on the Internet Protocol( IP), using broadband access networks.

Due to the greater bandwidth ofDSL methods, especially ADSL2+ and VDSL2, and back- channel-capable cable distribution networks, providers are increasingly focusing on double- and triple-play offerings. These bundled service offerings include Internet telephony with VoIP, Internet television( IPTV) with interactive television and interactive video services such as video-on-demand, video conferencing and telecommuting, and Internet access.

Triple Play is also of interest to businesses that benefit from lower-cost communications services such as hosted PBXs, Centrex services or lower call center operating costs. The service is also interesting for hotels, trade fairs and airports, as the higher bandwidth can be used for telephone, data access and operator and information TV, and infrastructure and administration costs can be reduced, as communication is only via one cable.

Depending on service usage, triple-play services require data rates of between 10 Mbit/s and 28 Mbit/s downstream and around 3 Mbit/s upstream. Quad-play services offer an extension oftriple-play services that includes mobility.
