transport network (TN)

The transport network( TN), also referred to as the core network, handles the targeted data transport with switching functions.

In terms of network protocol, a transport network can be ATM, an SDH network or an optical transport network( OTN).

Transport networks can guarantee certain transmission parameters, such as the provision of a certain bandwidth, quality of service, availability and scalability. Transport networks are addressed in the ITU G-series recommendations.
