As frequency converters, translators form the core of a head-end station.

Translators convert signals from the transmit frequency to the receive frequency. They can also have remodulator properties. In this process, the signals are demodulated, regenerated and modulated onto the new carrier. This procedure suppresses interference to the signals from the return channel and prevents them from reaching the forward channel, thus improving the signal-to- noise ratio.
