transfer syntax (TS)

The transfer syntax (TS) is a transfer coding between the instances of

the representation layers in a source and a target system. The transfer syntax describes which data types

and values are used, how they are to be structured and exchanged. The instances of the representation layer make agreements on a concrete transfer syntax. The mapping between abstract and concrete transfer syntax is called the representation context. The transfer syntax operates independently of the abstract syntax used between two application instances. Thus, multiple transfer syntaxes may well be used for one and the same abstract syntax.
