transcoding equipment (mobile communications) (TCE)

The transcoding equipment (TCE) can be part of the base station subsystem( BSS) and is used to adapt different voice codes between GSM and fixed networks.

Since voice is transmitted at 13 kbit/s in GSM networks, adaptation to the voice transmission rate of 64 kbit/s common in ISDN is necessary.

The TCE station, also known as a transcoder, handles bit rate adaptation between the radio base station controller( BSC) and the mobile switching center( MSC), switching through SS7 signaling, and adapting the transmission rate during data transmission.
