traction control system (TCS)

Traction control (TCS) is a technology used in motor vehicles that prevents the drive wheels from spinning, thereby helping the vehicle to stay in its lane. ASR systems were among the first driver assistance systems.

If the drive wheels spin when starting off or accelerating too hard, the traction control system builds up braking pressure. The spinning of the drive wheels, which can be caused by a wet or snow-covered surface, can cause the vehicle to swerve sideways out of the specified lane. This is prevented by the traction control system, which is equally effective on straight roads and in curves.

From a technical point of view, this is a control loop that uses sensors to record wheel speed, compares this with the driving values and triggers the brake pressure via actuators.
