traction battery

Traction batteries are normal batteries that are used in electric vehicles as intermediate energy storage. On the one hand for supplying the electric motors, on the other hand as energy storage for the smart grid or the smart home. This feed-back from the motor vehicle to the smart grid is called vehicle to grid( V2G), and the feed-back to the smart home is called vehicle to home( V2H) or vehicle to building (V2B).

Batteries, double layer capacitors and fuel cells are suitable as energy storage devices. As for batteries, compact, high- performance traction batteries with high energy density are used for traction, mainly in lithium technology, since energy density and battery weight are decisive criteria.

The energy density of lithium batteries depends on the materials used for the anode, cathode and separator and can reach energy densities of up to 250 Wh/kg for lithium-ion batteries. Since energy density has a direct impact on the range of electric cars, research is constantly being conducted into more efficient material combinations, suitable cell design and improved electrolytes.

In addition to the battery characteristics, traction batteries are subject to special safety standards and constant temperature monitoring and cooling. This, as well as the monitoring and control of the charging and discharging processes, is handled by the battery management system( BMS), which together with the rechargeable battery forms the battery system. As a rule, the battery with its battery cells and the battery management system form a compact, self-contained unit.
