tip ring sleeve (TRS)

The jack plug is an audio plug used for headphones, earphones, microphones, sound cards, in the instrument sector, as a speaker plug and also in hi-fi and video technology. In addition, safety extra-low voltages can be transmitted via the jack plug.

The structure of the plug corresponds to a pin with indentations, whereby the pin has several contact areas that are insulated from each other. Therefore, there are two-, three- and four-pole jack plugs. The plug tip (tip) can be spherical or conical in shape; the notch behind the plug tip is used for correct locking and triggers switching contacts. The plug tip is insulated from the ring, which also carries signals. The sleeve has ground potential.

Jack plugs come in a wide variety of sizes. The oldest version has a diameter of 6.35 mm, corresponding to 1/4", and is used in stereo systems, mixing consoles and keyboards. There is also a miniature version with a diameter of 3.5 mm (1/8") and a subminiature version with a diameter of 2.5 mm (3/32"). The subminiature version is only available for monophonicsignals, the other two for monophonic and stereophonic. There are also versions with a 4.4 mm diameter, which originates from telephone technology and is used in professional video technology, as well as two versions used in military technology with 5.23 mm and 7.13 mm.

Depending on the quality requirements, jack plugs can be single, silver-plated or gold-plated. The plug shape is standardized by the Electronics Industry Association( EIA) as a Recommended Standard and by the International Electrotechnical Commission( IEC) under IEC 60603.
