time slicing

Time-slicing means time-slice allocation; one could also speak of time-division multiplexing. It is a transmission technique used in DVB for Handhelds( DVB-H) and is used on the receiver side for energy saving.

A crucial aspect ofmobile TV is the energy requirement, which is decisive for the battery operating time. To extend this as long as possible, the energy requirement must be reduced as much as possible. In DVB-H, the various TV programs are transmitted as burst signals in time division multiplex. The data rate transmitted in the bursts is higher than in traditional streaming. At the receiving end, the individual burst signals are buffered and presented as a data stream.

Since the mobile device receives only one TV program, the others can be blanked out or they do not have to be received at all. The receiving part of the mobile device receives the bursts time-selectively and is switched off during the other time. This process is called time slicing and can contribute to energy savings of 80% or more.
