time sharing

The term time sharing is used in different contexts. In processor technology, it is a scheduling strategy in which several processes are provided with processor power at the same time. Depending on the scheduling, processor power is made available to the individual processes for a certain time.

After the execution of the programs or partial programs the processes are interrupted and the processor works on the next process. The order of magnitude of the individual time slices is a few thousandths of a second. At each interruption, the intermediate results are stored and resumed at the next time slice. This gives the impression that the computer is working on all programs simultaneously. Input and output operations of the individual users are possible at any time in the meantime.

Allocation of the processor power to the individual processes

There are different procedures with which the processor achievement is assigned in the time sharing to the processes. These procedures can be priority-, sequence- or time-controlled. Based on the allocation strategy, a distinction is made between First Come First Served( FCFS), Shortest Job First ( SJF), Round Robin( RR), Fixed External Priorities( FEP) and Earliest Deadline First( EDF). Furthermore, there are combinations of the aforementioned allocation strategies.
