time bandwidth product (TBP)

The product of time and bandwidth, Time Bandwidth Product (TBP), refers to short duration optical pulses and is related to the ratio between the pulse duration and the bandwidth required to generate the optical pulse.

For ideal pulses, the sum of the pulse width and the bandwidth has a minimum constant value. Normally, for ultrashort optical pulses, the half-width, Full Width at Half Maximum( FWHM), is specified. The minimum time-bandwidth product has the optical pulses at the bandwidth limit.

The time-bandwidth product determines the limits of the pulse width by the spectral bandwidth.
