time aware shaper (802.1Qbv) (TAS)

The basic principle of Time-Sensitive Networking(TSN) is based on the TAS method, Time Aware Shaper (TAS), and guarantees minimum transmission latency or real-time synchronization via the Precision Time Protocol( PTP).

Switches with TAS functionality divide the data traffic according to priorities into several queues that are processed according to a global schedule. In the process, frames are divided into classes by VLAN tagging and time-critical classes are prioritized.

The queues are controlled by their owntransmission gates. If a transmission gate opens, this means that the other transmission gates are closed. The corresponding queue is then switched through as data traffic.
