time and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON)

Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Network (TWDM-PON) is a multiplexing technique for optical access networks that combines time division multiplexing(TDM) and wavelength division multiplexing(WDM).

TWDM-PON technology can achieve data rates of up to 40 Gbps on existing passive optical networks (PON), meeting mobile backhaul requirements.

Current passive optical networks (PON) are used to provide Fiber to the Home ( FTTH) to customers in residential and commercial areas or to implement Mobile Backhauls. An upgrade to TWDM-PON offers higher data rates and better flexibility. TWDM-PON transmits at 3 to 8 different wavelengths. The bridgeable distance is between 20 km and 60 km.
