text encoding initiative (TEI)

The Text Encoding Initiative(TEI) is an organization and file format for documents. As a file format, the TEI format is suitable for the exchange of texts.

The TEI format, specified in the Document Type Definition( DTD), is based on the Standardized Generalized Markup Language ( SGML) and the Extensible Markup Language(XML).

The TEI file format is suitable for editing text, tables, and language information. The file format consists of a header that contains metadata. The header also defines data categories: File Description, Encoding Description, Text Profile, and Revision Documentation.
