terminal adapter (ISDN) (TA)

A terminal adapter( TA) is a technical device for connecting incompatible terminal equipment to the basicISDNline. Terminal adapters can be used to connect terminal equipment or additional equipment without an ISDN interface to ISDN. For this purpose, the control on the conventional interface must be converted to the control on the S0 interface.

The designation of the terminal adapters corresponds to the interface standard of the supported terminal equipment, e.g. TA X.21, TA X.25, TA V. 24 / V.28, TA Btx, TA Ttx and TA a/b. The latter is for connecting an a/b interface to the S0 bus. The terminal adapter TA X.21 is for the connection of data and text terminal equipment according to X.21 to the S0 bus, TA X.25 is for the adaptation of packet-oriented data terminal equipment according to X.25 to the S0 interface. All others adapt their interface to the S0 bus in the same way.

In addition, multifunctional and multi- channel terminal adapters are available on the market that serve several standards or several terminal interfaces. Technically, terminal adapters are realized as desktop devices and as modules for rack use. ISDN adapters for use in personalcomputers( PC) are called ISDN cards or ISDN controllers.

The technical effort behind the realization of a terminal adapter for V.24 on the S0 interface is illustrated by the standards to be considered in this example: V.110 in connection with I.463, V.120 in connection with I.465, X.30 in connection with I.461 and X.31 in connection with I.462.
