telecontrol

Telecontrol stands for the transmission of data signals for measurement, control and regulation purposes in plants. The term telecontrol is often used synonymously with telemetry, which includes remote measurement. If the data is transmitted wirelessly, it is telecontrol.

Telecontrol refers to the procedures for monitoring and controlling spatially separated outstations. According to the procedure, the outstations are interrogated from a central control station and report their measured data to the central control station, which activates the control mechanisms of the outstations. Outstations are autonomously operating units whose sensors record measured values from plants and systems, from the environment and weather, and report these to the control center on request. The control station sends command signals to the outstations to control the actuators.

In telecontrol, data is transmitted over Tk networks that support data transmission: Fixed networks, mobile networks and satellite networks.

In the past, Deutsche Telekom had a special circuit-switched Temex network, which was specially adapted to the needs of telemetry.

Telecontrol is divided into telemetering, teleindication, remote setting and remote switching. In the case of remote measurement, the data measured by the sensors is transmitted to the control center. The control center can display the measured values centrally via remote display, compare them with limit values and process them. With remote setting, which is performed from the control station, the parameters of the field station can be set, and with remote switching, a function is triggered directly in the field station.

For communication between the control station and the outstations, there are several proprietary protocols such as Sinaut and TG 065 from Siemens, industry standards such as the ModbusRTUprotocol and also the IEC 60870-5-101 and IEC 60870-5-103 protocols standardized by the International Electrotechnical Commission(IEC).
