automated maritime telecommunications system (AMTS)

The Automated Maritime Telecommunications System (AMTS) is a mobile maritime radio system operating in the frequency band allocated by the ITU between 216 MHz and 220 MHz.

The AMTS system provides full- duplex voice transmissions and data services to the maritime community. Communication can take place directly between two vessels without switching. Due to the VHF transmission frequencies, the base stations are located at a distance of about 100 km. Incoming calls are routed by the receiving base station.
