target wake time (LPWAN) (TWT)

Target Wake Time (TWT) is an activation function in radio networks as used in Low PowerWANs (LPWAN) according to IEEE 802.11ah but also in 802.11ac and 802.11ax to reduce the energy demand and thus to extend the battery life.

The TWT function can be used to define the time that a station remains in the low-energy twilight state and after which it can access the transmission medium again. The data exchange between the access point( AP) and the station contains an indication of the radio transmission activities. With this indication, the access point can contribute to collision avoidance with radio transmission from other stations by controlling the TWT function. The Target Wake Time is negotiated between the access point and the station.
