The Super Video CD (SVCD) is a further development of the Video CD( VCD) with a higher resolution, which is 576 x 480 pixels and 25 full frames for the PAL television standard.

Sound and picture are compressed with MPEG-1 audio and MPEG-2 and transmitted at a data rate of up to 2.6 Mbps. This means that approx. 30 to 80 minutes of video fit on an SVCD. Audio has a data rate of 32 kbit/s up to 384 kbit/s and, as with the video CD, can be stored in two channels with MPEG-1 or in multiple channels with MPEG-2 at a variable bit rate. Additional functions include still image playback with a resolution of 768 x 576 pixels. In addition, subtitles can be inserted in SVCD format 4.
