subscriber authentication key (Ki)

The individual authentication key (Ki) is used to authenticate cell phones or smartphones in mobile networks.

The authentication key is stored on the SIM card or USIM card and is transmitted from the SIM card to the GSM network during the log-in procedure. The GSM network uses a random number(RAND) in conjunction with the International Mobile Subscriber Identity( IMSI) and the authentication key to generate a checksum that is used to enable access to the GSM network.

In GSM, the authentication key (Ki) is a 128-bitkey that is used in the A3 algorithm and A8 algorithm for authentication and key generation.
