statistical time division multiplexing (STDM)
The statistical multiplexer, Statistical Time Division Multiplexing (STDM), is an improved time division multiplexer that takes the data from the individual input channels, reads it into a dynamically operating memory, from which it is then transported block by block over the transmission line.
One advantage of blockwise transmission is the simple block protection, whereby automatic error correction can be performed for each individual channel by the multiplexer. Unsecured data streams can thus be transmitted over longer distances and at high speeds without any problems by using multiplexers.
