A Static Var Compensator (SVC) is a component in power transmission networks that compensates for reactive
power. A static var compensator consists of capacitor banks and compensation coils that can be combined to compensate for the phase angle caused by excessive reactance. Depending on the phase angle and the reactive power, compensation coils and capacitor banks of different sizes are connected via thyristors for power factor correction. By this measure, the power supply network is loaded exclusively with active power. In addition, the SVC compensation dampens any oscillations that occur, which can lead to disturbances or even grid failures.
