static VAR compensator (HVDC) (SVC)

A Static VAR Compensator( SVC) is a component used in power transmission networks to compensate for reactive power.

A static reactive power compensator consists of capacitor banks and compensation coils that can be combined to compensate for the phase angle caused by excessive reactances. Depending on the phase angle and the reactive power, compensation coils and capacitor banks of different sizes are connected via thyristors for reactive power compensation. By this measure, the power supply network is loaded with active power only. In addition, the SVC compensation dampens any oscillations that occur, which can lead to disturbances or even power failures.
