standardised transcoding interface (MMSC) (STI)

The Standardized Transcoding Interface(STI) is an interface between the MultimediaMessaging Service Center( MMSC) and a transcoding server.

The STI interface, specified by the Open Mobile Alliance( OMA), is used to transmit encoded messages to the transcoding server for transcoding. Messages created by user agents, cell phones, smartphones, netbooks, or other terminal devices are transmitted from the Multimedia Messaging Service Center via the Standardized Transcoding Interface to the Transcoding Server, which reformats them so that they can be displayed by receiving devices using other display formats.

The transcoding server can be an internal or external transcoder. It can also be a proxy that is integrated into the MMSC via the MM1 interface.
