Splitting is the division of a connection or connection splitting to several connections. In connection splitting, the function of one layer is divided among several connections of the subordinate layer; this is then referred to as multipath routing.

Splitting functions are performed by splitters that divide signals among several transmission paths according to certain criteria. The individual connections can run over one network, but different networks and connection paths can also be used. In addition, the transmission paths can use different transmission media.

The inverse function of splitting is the merging of connections, also called connection collection or recombining.
